Our Work
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has the 5th highest under-five mortality rate in the world. In 2023, MFH had projects in Luvungi, Burhale, Ciherano, and Tuungane, some of the poorest rural communities in the country’s South Kivu province. These four clinics serve approximately 136,000 people. Many of the families were traveling long distances to health facilities that lacked adequate infrastructure, medicines, supplies, and qualified staff.
MFH works in partnership with local partners to build the capacity of health facilities and medical providers in order to improve health outcomes for vulnerable women and children. We have purchased much needed basic clinical equipment, increased health care access to the region, and implemented an effective community outreach and education program. These activities have led to an increase in prenatal and postnatal consultations, more mothers delivering at the health facilities, and increased access to nutritional foods.
