Marcia Alvarez Joins Medicines for Humanity

Marcia Alvarez is a public health specialist who recently joined Medicines for Humanity (MFH) in the pivotal role of Program Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean. She will manage all maternal and child health projects and staff in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. “Marcia is an accomplished Public Health professional who is passionately dedicated to empowering children and their mothers living in marginalized communities. She brings a great deal of knowledge and expertise focusing on pregnant women and their babies,” stated MFH Program Director Kenneth Muko.

“My commitment to global health is deeply rooted in my upbringing. Having grown up in a family where both parents were actively engaged in international development, my sense of mission and desire to contribute to healing the world is very strong,” said Mrs. Alvarez. “Joining MFH in this new role provides a great opportunity for me to collaborate with a committed and dedicated team that is poised to make a significant impact on maternal and child health projects around the world.”

In her most recent roles at the Indiana State Family & Social Services Administration and the Indiana State Department of Health, Marcia served as a Family & Social Services Administrator and a Lead Case Investigator, respectively. As a Resource Mobilization Manager, she led strategic planning for proposals focusing on gender-based violence. These positions equipped her with valuable administrative and research skills. Her three-year tenure as a Project Manager for Plan International in Cameroon showcased her leadership abilities as she directed a pilot project in rural areas engaging men to raise awareness about their roles in maternal and child health.

Marcia holds several degrees, including a B.Sc. in Plant & Soil Science from Tuskegee University, an M.A. in Chemistry from Hunter College, CUNY, and an M.Sc. in Public Health with a focus on Reproductive & Sexual Health Research from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Additionally, she earned an M.Sc. in Management with specializations in Information Systems & Services, along with Graduate Certificates in Project Management and Learning, Design & Technology from the University of Maryland.
