Home Gardens Transform Lives in Haiti
Edner Antoine faced a heart-wrenching reality. His youngest son was severely malnourished, and despite his best efforts, Edner struggled to provide the nourishment his family needed. Living in the rural, impoverished community of Grand Boulage, Haiti, options were limited. Edner's life took a dramatic turn when Medicines for Humanity (MFH), in partnership with Seeds of Hope for Haiti (SHH), launched the home gardens project.
Edner’s was among the first twenty families chosen for this critically needed initiative. MFH contracted an agronomist to train Edner and the other families on best agricultural practices, optimal planting timelines, and the benefits of drought-resistant crops. Supplied with seeds, tools, and newfound knowledge, Edner set out to transform his plot of land into a thriving garden.
The results were life changing. Edner's garden thrived, producing corn, cassava, sweet potatoes, millet, Congo peas, and black beans. These crops not only provided the essential nutrients that brought his son back to health, but also ensured that his entire family enjoyed nutritious meals.
"The garden saved my family," Edner shared. "This garden not only feeds my entire family but also generates income, enabling me to send my children to school." Edner's success didn't stop there. He used the funds generated from his harvest to start two additional gardens, further increasing his crop yield.
Edner's story highlights the power of community-driven solutions. With rising food prices and widespread violence limiting families’ access to larger markets, the home gardens project has become a lifeline for families like Edner's. His children, once at risk of malnutrition, are now healthy and thriving.
