Happening Now: Hurricane Matthew Relief Efforts in Haiti and the DR
October 6, 2016 - Hurricane Matthew ripped across the Caribbean the last two days. Haiti was hit the hardest. The potential result is the worst humanitarian crisis in the Western hemisphere since 2010. That year Haiti was rocked by an earthquake and the results were catastrophic. For a country still struggling to rebuild, the timing could not be worse. Many people have lost everything.
Makeshift homes have been destroyed by winds, people's belongings are underwater or washed away in mudslides, and water supplies are at high-risk for contamination due to the flooding. Cholera was already a significant public health threat in Haiti. It has now risen to the level of an emergency. Outbreaks in the crowded capital city of Port-Au-Prince are likely and pregnant women and children are the most vulnerable. Providing them with food and safe drinking water is the number one priority.
Medicines for Humanity's partners, the Daughters of Charity in Port-Au-Prince and the Little Sisters of St. Therese in Riviere Froide, are on the ground. These brave sisters and the impoverished people they serve desperately need our help again.
