Empowering Zambia's Community Health Workers

In rural communities in Zambia, Medicines for Humanity (MFH) is leading an exciting initiative to empower Community Health Workers (CHWs) with Economic Strengthening Activities. MFH provided CHWs with seed funding and met with them to provide training on small business development and management. CHWs invested that funding into a group business of their choice.

Across our project sites, CHWs embraced entrepreneurship, many choosing to start businesses that met needs in their communities, like corn milling plants, piggeries, and poultry farms. Through ongoing support and supervision from MFH, all of the businesses are still successfully generating income, and have replaced the need for stipends. Many CHWs are also able to put funds into savings accounts or make other investments.

The sustainable impact of this program goes beyond economic gains. It has enhanced CHW motivation to continue serving their communities. CHWs visit households to provide basic health services and educate families on critical health topics like hygiene, nutrition, and safe delivery practices. The result is healthier families and stronger communities.
